Gold is range-bound between $4,100 and $4,200 as markets wait for the Federal Reserve’s decision on October 28. Hot inflation keeps pressure on the Fed: September CPI came in at 3.7% and producer prices jumped 6.3%.
Rates are winning the tug of war. Conflict in the Middle East and shipping risk around the Strait of Hormuz support safe-haven demand, but the same shock pushes oil and inflation up, which keeps US yields high. Since the start of 2026, the rate effect has beaten the safe-haven effect.
What could change the picture: a Fed that signals it is done hiking, softer inflation in the PCE (Oct 29) and CPI (Nov 10) reports, or a return of gold ETF buying. On the other side, a hawkish Fed and hot data could push gold back toward $4,000.

XAUUSD is the market symbol for the price of one troy ounce of gold in US dollars. "XAU" is the ISO 4217 code for gold (X marks a non-national currency, AU comes from aurum, Latin for gold) and "USD" is the US dollar. If XAUUSD is quoted at 4,200.00, one ounce of gold costs 4,200 dollars.
Retail traders usually access XAUUSD through spot gold or gold CFDs offered by brokers. These are typically leveraged, which magnifies both gains and losses. On many platforms one standard lot is 100 troy ounces, so a $1 move changes the value of one lot by about $100, but contract sizes vary, so always check yours. Work out your size with the position size calculator and read our XAUUSD risk management guide. New to gold? Start with what is XAUUSD.
Spot gold trades almost 24 hours on weekdays, but liquidity is uneven. The Asian session is often quieter and range-bound, the London open tends to bring expansion, and the London-New York overlap with US data releases usually brings the largest moves. No single factor explains gold at all times. Relationships shift, and several drivers can pull in opposite directions. For the full explanation, read what moves gold prices.
Gold is priced in dollars. A stronger dollar often (not always) weighs on XAUUSD, and a weaker dollar can support it.
Gold pays no interest. When inflation-adjusted Treasury yields rise, the opportunity cost of holding gold rises too.
Rate decisions, projections and speeches reshape expectations for yields and the dollar.
CPI, PCE, payrolls and growth data change rate expectations and can trigger sharp intraday moves.
Conflicts, crises and market stress can increase demand for gold as a perceived safe haven.
Futures positioning, ETF flows and central bank buying shape the bigger picture.

The live XAUUSD chart at the top of this page shows the current spot gold price in US dollars per troy ounce. The “Gold today” panel shows the latest COMEX gold futures price, the day’s range and the 52-week high and low, refreshed automatically. Futures and spot usually differ by a few dollars.
The chart and quote box come from an embedded TradingView widget; depending on the provider, quotes may be real-time or delayed and are indicative only. The statistics panel uses COMEX gold futures data refreshed several times a day. XAUUSD Global does not generate prices. Always confirm with your own broker before you trade.
XAU is the currency code for one troy ounce of gold and USD is the US dollar. “XAU to USD” or XAUUSD is simply the price of one ounce of gold in dollars. If XAUUSD is 4,000, one ounce of gold costs $4,000.
One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams. Divide the price per ounce by 31.1035 to get the price per gram, or use the converter on this page, which also handles 10 grams, tola, kilograms, purity (24K, 22K, 18K) and local currencies.
Short-term moves usually come from changes in real interest rates, the US dollar, Federal Reserve expectations, inflation and jobs data, and safe-haven demand. The “Why gold is moving” box on this page summarizes the current picture, and our news hub has the full story and calendar.
Spot gold trades over the counter, so there is no single official price. Each broker and liquidity provider quotes its own bid and ask, and spreads widen around news and in quiet hours. Futures prices also include a small premium for time to delivery.
Spot gold (XAUUSD) is the price for immediate settlement. COMEX gold futures are exchange-traded contracts for future delivery, so they usually trade a little above spot because of interest and storage costs. Both move almost together.
The international price excludes import duties, taxes such as GST or VAT, dealer premiums and making charges. Local jewelry rates (for example 22K per 10 grams) add those on top, so they are always higher than the converted international price.
Around the London open, the London-New York overlap and especially US data at 8:30 am New York time and Fed decisions. See the hour-by-hour heatmap on our gold volatility page.
